Spring Startup: Where Winter Damage Shows Up

Freeze damage patterns in irrigation systems and how to spot them at startup.

Water expands when it freezes. The parts that fail first are the ones that held water: backflow assemblies, valves, exposed laterals and fittings at the highest points.

At spring startup, watch each zone as it charges. A zone that sputters, sprays at a fitting or refuses to hold pressure has likely split somewhere that stayed wet over winter.

Catching these at startup prevents weeks of quiet water loss under the surface. A system that passes a pressure hold after startup is usually good for the season.
